  • Psychological disorders in Malayalam movies

    1) Vadakkunokkiyantram (1989): the story of a printing press operator who is burdened with insecurities about his short physique and dark complexion. His insecurities are heightened by the fact that his wife is very beautiful and taller than him. The movie shows how he is highly possessive of his wife and gradually becomes paranoid and starts having delusion of infidelity which worsens his marital relationship

    2) Innale (1990): The movie reveals the story of a married lady called Gauri, the survivor of a tragic bus accident during her travel to a religious place. She is diagnosed as having retrograde amnesia due to the accident and fall in love with a doctor. She has forgotten herself and her past which gives the film its title Innale.

    3) Ente Sooryaputhrikku : is a 1991 Malayalam film is revolving around the story of Maya who is the spoiled child of a rich man. Various scenes in the movie portray her impulsivity, suicidal gestures and other borderline personality characteristics.

    4) Ulladakam (1991) : This movie depicts post traumatic stress disorder, after being raped and witnessing her lover’s murder, the female lead develops initial periods of intense anxiety and fearfulness, followed by a pervasive low mood. She is seen to become anxious and aggressive upon encountering situations and scenarios related to her rape, which include the sea and the sound of drums.)

    5) Manichitratazhu (1993): is a classic psychological thriller in the history of Malayalam film industry. The movie depicts the dissociative personality in Ganga who lived in solitude which has tampered her mind, and lived around myths during her childhood. Her repeated thoughts of loneliness and parents leaving her ended her up in a pathological trance which turns into a psychological breakdown in later stage. She neither saw herself in nagavalli nor sympathetically attracted to her.

    6) Tanmatra (2005) : is a Malayalam movie about a loving father who dreams big for his son. But he has to contend with the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. The movie depicts how the memory loss affects his activities of daily living, and shows his forgetfulness, personality changes, paraphasias, perseveration in speech, etc. Caregiver burden is depicted well, and the therapist even explains the relevance of addressing this burden.

    7) Spirit (2011): depicted how alcohol dependence disrupts interpersonal relationships and interfering with one’s work. Spirit also clearly depicted pathological intoxications, craving and withdrawal symptoms

    8) North 24 Kaatham : is a Malayalam movie released in 2013 is about architect who suffers from Obsessive–compulsive personality disorder who is s very strict about his hygiene and stringent follower of routine even when it hampers his career growth and social interaction. The movie also clearly portrays how he is finally overcoming his OCPD.

    9) Njangalude Veettile Athithikal (2014):revolving around the theme of psychosis, following the accidental death of her daughter due to a mistake committed by her husband. The heroine hallucinates a male figure and develops secondary delusion of love towards him.

    10) Mili (2015): about a female leads with anxious avoidant personality traits who suffered from fear of and hypersensitivity to criticism, social isolation, issues with self-esteem and shyness in spite of their desire for close companionship.
